Zusammenfassung:	A device 1 for applying paints that features the following: an apparatus for producing a stream of paint particles, a guide element 10 with a surface 11 for limiting the stream of paint particles in space, wherein the guide element 10 is realised in such a way that and area 20 situated adjacent to its surface 11 can be kept free of paint particles. Means for keeping the surface free may be a flow of gas or air from a source 13. Alternative means may be electrostatic, with the surface being charged so as to repel the paint particles. Alternatively the surface may comprise a paint repelling material such as PTFE or a material expressing a lotus-effect. The device is particularly suitable for applying paint to motor vehicles and may be part of a robot for doing so. Also disclosed is a method of using such a device.
