Covering of an interior element of a motor vehicle equipped with an airbag and method for producing such a covering

The invention proposes a covering of an interior element of a motor vehicle equipped with an airbag. Two covering parts 7, 8 are provided which are arranged in an overlapping manner. The outer covering part 7 in the region of an end facing a piping 12 is formed as a two-layer hem. A piping tab 11 receiving the piping is sewn together with the one covering part 8 by means of a holding seam 13. A tearing seam 14 is sewn together with the inner covering part 8, the piping tab and the inner hem portion 9. In addition, a double seam 15 is sewn together with the inner and outer hem portion 9, 10. With a method for producing the covering according to the invention the holding seam is sewn in a first step, in a second step the tearing seam and in a third step the double seam. The covering may particularly be that of a vehicle seat, such that the appearance of the seat is improved while allowing the airbag to expand by breaking the tearing seam only.
