Downloading widgets for television using a mobile terminal

A method of downloading widgets (standalone functions for the display of specific information such as weather, sports results etc) for use on a television 5 includes using a control application on a mobile terminal (such as mobile phone 9) to identify widgets available for download from a network environment, such as the internet. The selected widget is downloaded to a widget box 1 which incorporates a widget execution engine. The engine acts in a manner similar to a set-top box by interpreting the widgets for display on the television screen overlaid upon, or instead of, the currently displayed image. Widgets may be identified on a remote server 8 and selected for download by the user. The widget may be downloaded to the mobile terminal and forwarded to the widget box via a local wireless connection, for example. Alternatively the user may cause the widget to be sent direct to the widget box from the server by mobile communications technology etc. The mobile terminal control application and widget box thus enable a television user to benefit from widget functions, without necessitating an internet-connected computer or specially adapted television set.
