Zusammenfassung:	A device and method for correcting code wheel misalignment which employs upper and lower code wheel misalignment photo-detectors (90a, 90b) positioned above and below at least first and second motion detection photo-detectors (41a, 43a). When the difference the between the misalignment detectors exceeds threshold, an error signal is generated. Also disclosed is a device and method for automatically setting the gain of an output circuit in an optical encoder using a gain control photo-detector and circuit. Still further embodiments of optical encoders combine the code wheel misalignment and automatic gain control features.
