Zusammenfassung:An apparatus 10 and method for dampening stress waves propagated from the detonation of an explosive device 18 in a wellbore 16 to protect a device 22 positioned downhole. The method includes the steps of: positioning a shock dissipater 20 between an explosive device 18 and a package 22; detonating the explosive device 18 propagating a stress wave 36 toward the shock dissipater 20 and the package 22, the shock dissipater 20 reflecting a portion of the stress wave 36. The shock dissipater 20 may have two interfaces 32, 32ab, 32bc arranged between materials 30a, 30b, 30c of dissimilar acoustic impedances selected to reflect a compressive portion 36r of the stress wave at one interface 32ab and a tensile portion 36t of the stress wave at another interface 32bc.
