Zusammenfassung: | Articles having substantially cylindrical bodies 52 comprise a plurality of circumferential layers 40, each layer having at least one ply of material 36, the material 36 comprising a weave fabric, a non-crimp fabric, or a combination of both. The article may comprise 4 layers, the first and fourth comprising 0/90 degree tows and the second and third comprising non-crimp fabric with complimentary positively and negatively angled tows of between 10 and 80 degrees. Alternatively the second and third plies may comprise weave fabric including 45 degree and minus 45 degree tows. During manufacture the layers are wound onto a former, and resin is applied and cured. The 0 degree tows may be removed from edge regions of the fabric so as to facilitate formation of an integral flange 54 in the end region of the cylindrical body, a shoe 56 on the former being provided to facilitate formation of the flange. The article may be a fan casing for a jet engine. Use of weave and non-crimp fabrics is said to provide enhanced delaminating characteristics and consequential increased energy dissipation after impact, compared with triaxial braid. |
