Zusammenfassung:	Apparatus 110, such as a vending machine, is connected to a power socket 116 via a control unit 112. The control unit 112 includes a detector 114, such an infra-red detector or a PIR detector, which detects the presence of a person near the apparatus 110. After a period of inactivity (no person detected) the control unit turns off the apparatus 110, thus reducing energy consumption.
