Zusammenfassung:	A method of operating control units of a motor vehicle, the control units communicating via at least one data bus, wherein a gateway control unit, controlling the data transfer on the data bus(es), and a plurality of motor-vehicle control units controlling the functioning of an assembly, for example the functioning of an engine, a gearbox or an air-conditioning system of the motor vehicle, are connected to the data bus(es). One of the control units, preferably the gateway control unit, centrally generates a diagnostic message which is valid for the other control units, preferably for the motor-vehicle control units, and transmits it on the data bus(es) to the other control units, wherein the other control units undertake error storage exclusively when an error storage function is or has been acticated via the diagnostic error.
