Latched panel assembly with latch state indicator

An assembly for providing an indication of panel latching includes a stationary member 24 with a light source 40, a first optical fibre 42 coupled to the light source and mounted on the stationary member, a movable panel 10 and a panel latch assembly 28, 30. A second optical fibre 44 mounted on the movable panel is coupled to an indicator 46. The latch state determines whether light passes from the first optical fibre to the second and so to the indicator 46. As shown an overhead bin in an aircraft has a door with two latch assembles driven from a common handle and each connecting an LED light source 40 via a pair of optical fibres to an indicator adjacent a latch release handle 16. The arrangement can be such as to either allow (indicator on) or obstruct (indicator off) light transmission between each pair when latch 28 correctly engages striker 30.
