Zusammenfassung: | A charred biological material comprises microbes capable of metabolising at least one substance, wherein the substance is present in the material. The microbes may be bacteria and/or fungi and may comprise multiple strains. The bacteria may include Nitromonas, Nitrobacter, and/or Azotobacter, especially Pseudomonas fluorescens. The substance may be a pollutant, such as a hydrocarbon, trichloroethylene, phenols, chlorinated phenols, cyanides, nitrates, or ammonia. Typically, the material is wood charcoal and may have been pre-treated with a salt or a nutrient. A method for treating an area in which the substance is present using the material is also disclosed. The area may comprise contaminated soil, water, sewage or sludge, oil waste or spills, landfill or landfill leachate, biodegradable waste, industrial effluent, or airborne contaminants. An air filter comprising the material is also described. |
