Zusammenfassung:	A motor vehicle comprises a transmission control system 10 for an automatic gearbox 11 which has a number of operating modes, eg drive park, reverse neutral. The transmission control system 10 comprises a transmission control unit 13 electrically connected, eg by a CAN bus, to a shift selector 14 having a number of selector positions and sensors 15b that detect a position of lever 15a which selects the operating modes of the transmission. If a failure occurs in, for example, the shift selector 14 it is detected by the transmission control unit 13 which is interfaced with an instrument panel, eg a trip recorder provided with push button 20 that acts as an emergency auxiliary gear selector in order to enable a driver to select a forward mode of the gearbox 11. The push button 20 is connected to a display unit 18 which alerts the driver to the failure. Push button 20 may be used to select an operating mode only when a brake sensor 17 detects an application of a brake.
