Zusammenfassung:	An emission control apparatus is disclosed in which n exhaust gas cooler 13 is positioned upstream from a lean NOx trap 15 to reduce the temperature of the exhaust gases passing through the lean NOx trap 15. The exhaust gas cooler 13 may be located in a wastegate passage 16 for a turbocharger 20 and allows the lean NOx trap 15 to be positioned close to an outlet from an engine 10. In a preferred embodiment a three way catalyst 14 and the lean NOx trap 15 are mounted in a single housing 22.
