Beschreibung
Zusammenfassung:	A position detecting system 10 particularly suited to machine tool applications comprises a plurality of position sensing devices D1, D3, D3... each generating information about the position of an element along or relative to an axis, and a plurality of environmental condition sensors S1, S2, S3... (e.g. temperature, humidity, workpiece hardness). A communications network 12 links the sensors so that each position sensor receives information generated by the other sensors. Each position detector adjusts its output to take into account measurements made by the other position sensors and the environmental sensors. Thus the position sensors continuously self calibrate and correct the changes in position along other axes in order to provide high precision position measurement. The position sensing devices may be inductive position detectors D having a train of magnetic balls 20 and magnetic markers 22. A method of position detection is also disclosed.
