Zusammenfassung:A vehicle is equipped with a host computer (102) which can generate alarms in emergency situations amongst other things. There is also provided a telecommunications device (104), (eg. cellular or satellite phone) for communicating these emergency alarms. The vehicle is also provided with a socket allowing the connection of an external computer (140) (eg a laptop or PDA). Switch (108) is provided to connect either of the host or the external computer to the telecommunications device. When it is active the external computer sends a request for access to the telecommunications device to the host computer. If the host determines the communication acceptable it causes the switch to connect the external computer and the telecommunications device, otherwise the switch connects the host to the telecommunications device. In the event of an emergency the host may terminate the external computer connection and regain access to the telecommunications device. Different emergencies and different external computer communications may be assigned priorities to determine which gains access to the telecommunications device. The system operates an RS-232 protocol.
