Zusammenfassung:	A downhole well apparatus comprises a setting piston (70) movably disposed within the apparatus, such that a slips (71) and seal (72) arrangement may be set by the setting piston(70) in response to hydraulic pressure. An unlocking/unsetting piston (84) is actuated in response to a source of unlocking/unsetting hydraulic pressure via unlocking/unsetting port 69. The downhole apparatus is usually a packer, and may be set/locked and unset/unlocked multiple times without being removed from the well. Preferably, the unlocking/unsetting piston (84) returns to its original position on removal of unlocking hydraulic pressure. One embodiment of the hydraulically controlled packer is capable of being hydraulically unset prior to locking thus allowing fine tuning of packer location in relation to oil-bearing strata.
