Portable inkjet printer having a printer unit and a base station wherein the station includes an opening to receive an image receiving medium for printing

The printer includes a print unit 2 with a housing in which an inkjet print head (24,Fig.2) is mounted for movement over a print face defined by the housing and a base station 1 arranged to receive the unit. The base station has an opening 8 to receive paper such that the paper lies adjacent the print face during printing. A print operation can be executed on the paper when the printer unit is mounted in the base station. Alternatively, the print unit may be removed from a recess 4 in the base station and placed on a piece of paper for printing thereon. The print head may be cleaned by being driven across a cleaning station (22,Fig.2). An image generating processor (45,Fig.5) may be connected to the print unit, the processor storing information to be printed in a memory unit such that if printing of a sequence of images is interrupted, it can be re-established from the store. A method of selecting a symbol to be printed is also disclosed (Fig.4), where a series of subsets of symbol types is displayed, a subset being selected based on display of a particular symbol and wherein subsequently the symbols of the subset are sequentially displayed such that a particular symbol may be printed.
