The ultrasound pulse is coupled in the screw head and the echo times are measured during the screwing. One or more parameters for varying the echo time as a function of tension are calculated from the material characteristics of the screw and pre-recorded data. One or more parameters for the ratio of echo time to tension variation are output and compared with the pre-recorded data.
