Sense and antisense gene constructs containing these sequences are also claimed, as are plants, preferably woody plants, more preferably Eucalyptus plants transformed wit these constructs. Methods of modifying lignin content or composition of a plant transformed with such constructs are also claimed. Use of a cDNA encoding an enzyme having 4-coumarate:coenzyme A ligase activity in the transformation of a plant for wood pulp production.
