Zusammenfassung:The vacuum hold on a sheet 32 in a printer, including a perforated carrier 36, is regulated in response to a detected deflection of the sheet. A deflection pressure may be applied to the sheet by a vacuum line 51 so that the deflection may be measured, thereby indicating the stiffness of the sheet. A further deflection detection may be made with the deflection pressure turned off. The deflection detector may be remote from the carrier. Preferably the carrier is a suction roller (fig. 1) which may have sectors with different levels of suction.
