Zusammenfassung:A process for producing a modified surface layer at the surface of an otherwise beryllium substrate involves exposure of the surface, to an oxygen ion implanting beam. A gas bearing 160 includes a shaft 162 of beryllium disposed in a rotor 164 of ceramic material. End thrust plates 168, 172 are also of beryllium. Facing surfaces of the shaft and the thrust plates are treated to produce a beryllium oxide layer by ion implantation.
