Process for the allocation of multiplex channels in a communication system

Multiplex channels with a number of time slots are provided for the transmission of voice and/or data signals between connection interface devices AE and an interface SN. First connection interface devices AE(ABG1) are only allocated to a first pair M' of multiplex channels. Second connection interface devices AE(ABG2) however are allocated in addition a further pair M" of channels. In the case of a telecommunications connection via second connection interface devices AE(ABG2) a decision is made concerning which pair of multiplex channels should be utilised so that their use is equalised. This avoids the overload condition found in the prior art, in which a connection from one half of the trunk unit L' is rejected even if there are free time slots available in the other half of the trunk unit L".
