Zusammenfassung: | A method of increasing the surface hardness of a metal comprises locally melting the surface of the metal by laser excitation under a stream of nitrogen and controlling the availability of nitrogen within the field wherein the nitrogen stream is diluted with an inert gas. This method of laser nitriding results in substantial hardening of the treated metal but eliminates surface defects such as cracks or pores, which occur in prior art techniques. This controlling is achieved by dilution of the nitrogen gas stream with an inert gas, adjusting the flow rate or laser traverse speed. Rotation of the laser beam also eliminates surface defects. |
