Zusammenfassung:	The formation of flaws or scratches on the surfaces of the fuel rods is reduced by inserting the fuel rods into the grid cells of the supporting grids 4 while the supporting grids are disposed in close proximity to each other, between successive grids thereby avoiding droop of fuel rod tips between successive grids. The grids are held in supports 50 on a base 71, and fuel rods are pushed from a magazine 20 shorter than the rods by means of pushers 42 through the grids 4 into contact with a rod holder 60. Rod holder 60 is attached to the final grid 4 and holds the rod ends by suction. A mechanism is provided to move the supports 50 along base 71, each holder being arrested in a predetermined position by a respective stop means 80. The rods are held by the holder 60 during this movement to extract them from the magazine and maintain them inserted in all the grids.
