Disposal of waste material

A shallow land-burial repository for radioactive and other waste comprises a concrete container 10 having a domed roof 12 and a peripheral wall 13 and optionally a floor 23. A domed upper concrete roof 16 acts as an intrusion barrier and is covered by a water-impervious layer of clay 20 and earth 21. The outer surfaces of roof 12 and wall 13 are exposed or readily exposable to permit inspection and the space around the container may be such as to permit remedial work. Inspection and remedial work may be by workmen or remotely controlled equipment. The upper roof 16 may be part of the containment vessel of an existing reactor being decommissioned, and the container may be in the form of stacked individual containers which may be removable and whose surfaces can be inspected.
