Zusammenfassung:Corrosion resistant steel components are produced by a gaseous carburisation or carbonitriding process to provide a surface rich in carbon which is then heat-treated in a gaseous atmosphere to produce an epsilon iron carbonitride layer thereon. The component may be oxidised and quenched subsequent to the second heat-treatment step, which may be carried out up to 800 DEG C i.e. above the pearlite-austenite transformation temperature of the steel.
