Spacers for use in brazing

A spacer for use in brazing has a steel plate body (1) provided on its surface, by a spraying process, e.g. flame, plasma spraying, with a coating (2) of an inorganic substance which is low in wettability in relation to the brazing filler metal to be used in the brazing in which the spacer is to be used. The coating (2) prevents fused brazing filler metal and from being introduced into gaps between the spacer and products separated by the spacer, and hence prevents the products being bound together by such filler metal. When the brazing filler is copper, the coating may be alumina, zirconia, a mixture of zirconia and titania, magnesium zirconate or boron nitride.
