Zusammenfassung:An optical fibre is coated with a hydrogen-impermeable material which is either a metal e.g. indium or tin, or a dielectric, e.g. silicon nitride, or possibly carbon by a CVD process as the fibre moves continuously through the deposition zone. The optical fibre may comprise a glass core and a cladding layer made of a glass with a lower refractive index than that of the core, and the coated optical fibre may have a layer of abrasion resistant plastics material on the coating. In the drawing, as illustrated in the figure an optical fibre 6 is positioned along the longitudinal axis of an inner perforated silica tube 1 which is coaxially within an outer silica tube. Feed tubes 3 for the introduction of the different reactive constituents are arranged between the two silica tubes so as to allow the vapours to pass through the perforations in the inner tube 1 into the deposition zone where the optical fibre is positioned.
