Zusammenfassung:	Compositions having herbicidal and/or fungicidal activity which comprise a carrier and, as active ingredient, a substituted beta carboline of the formula:- wherein X represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or alkyl or alkoxy group; R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkenyl, or acyl group, and Y represents a halogen atom or an alkoxy or alkylthio group. With the exception of the compound wherein X is hydrogen, R is methyl and Y is chlorine, the compounds are claimed per se, and processes are described for the preparation of such compounds.
