Zusammenfassung:	A process for the preparation of carbinols of the general formula I wherein R , R and R are hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl or R and R together or R and R together form an alkylene group and R is C1-4 alkanoyl, aroyl or hydrogen, comprises reacting an olefin of the general formula II with the reaction product of chloral and a catalyst of the general formula III Fen(NH4)xYm.Ap III wherein Y is halide, sulphate, phosphate, oxalate or acetate, A is H2O, ROH, R3N (where R is C1-4 alkyl), n is 1 to 3, m is 1 to 3, p is 1 to 6, and x is 0 or 1, and thereafter decomposing the product obtained in acid conditions to give a compound of formula (I) in which R is a hydrogen atom, or acylating the product obtained to give a compound of formula (I) in which R is aroyl or C1-4 alkanoyl. The compounds prepared can be used as intermediates in preparing permethrin and other pyrethroid insecticides.
