Wheelchair

The wheelchair has a fifth wheel device including a vertical supporting tube 29 for the fifth, castor wheel (not shown), a guide sleeve 23 for guiding the tube 29, and a toggle mechanism 30-36 whereof a bell-crank lever 32 can be manually turned to displace the mechanism between a condition to one side of a dead-centre condition and corresponding to a raised condition of the fifth wheel in which front and rear pairs of wheels only of the wheelchair are on the ground and a condition to the other side of the dead-centre condition and corresponding to a lowered condition in which the front pair of wheels and the fifth wheel only are on the ground, giving improved manoevrability. The wheelchair also has a plate-like armrest 6 which is so mounted on a foldable frame 1 as to be displaceable from a vertical, normal position 6' through a horizontal bridging position 6'' (for patient transfer) to a lowered position 6.
