Preparing surfaces.-Glass, porcelain, wooden, or other non-conducting articles to be plated are saturated or coated with an adhesive substance, such as slowly-drying oil varnish or gold size, which can dry but does not dissolve in water or melt readily. Silver, brass, copper, or other metallic leaf is then applied before the adhesive is quite dry. Porous substances such as wood are saturated with oil and allowed to dry before the above-described treatment.
