Improvements in and relating to Stuffing Boxes

Boxes; glands; draining; packing; metallic; packing, substitutes for.-The packing is surrounded by a bevelled segmental ring C, the parts of which are separated by recessed helical or other springs E and their joints covered by leaf springs I. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the segmental ring C engages the inner end of the stuffing-box and a cover B, provided with a gland J, which is adjusted by bolts G, and flat end bearings are provided for the packing by a grooved ring N and a bevelled ring M. A drainage passage Q from the space between the ring C and the stuffing-box is provided. In a modification, the inner bearing for the segmental ring C consists of a sleeve fitting in the cylinder casting, which is connected to the cover by bolts, the flat bearings for the packing being provided by a bush in the sleeve and a ring M as before; the outer cylindrical surfaces of the sleeve and the cover may be provided with baffle-grooves. In another form, the bearings for the segmental ring C are formed on the cylinder casting and on a cap which screws thereon, while the flat bearings for the packing are provided by two rings M.
