Belts of the class described in Specifications 12,592/90, 504/92, and 20,098/03 are built up of lengths stitched together, each length consisting of short strands of leather a formed with scarfed ends b and arranged in two layers c, d so that, on passing through a sewing-machine, the exposed scarfed edges all trail in the same direction. Three rows of stitching may be used. The lengths are stretched separately, bored, and then bound together by traverse stitching j, the edges of the lengths forming the face of the belt.
