Zusammenfassung:28,555. McBride, L. M. Dec. 7. Arc l a m p s.- Electrodes are fed from magazines, fixed in an overlapping position, as shown, to a pair of converging feedtubes, independent of the magazines, and mounted in sleeves pivoted in insulated brackets 19. The tubes have inclined stops 49, preferably of carborundum, and pass through flues 34, their approach being limited by screws 37. T h e upper parts of the tubes are cut away adjacent to the open ends of the flat magazines. The bottom of each magazine is an inclined bar 24, attached to, or integral with, the brackets 19 on a base-plate 1; the upper edge is less inclined than the bar, so that the electrodes, urged by a leaf spring 48, are in contact near their lower ends only. The magazines are charged through funnels 45 and holes in the casing with spring covers. The flues 34 have spring-pressed sliding covers and branches 38 for carrying the fumes from an economizer 7 to the outside of the casing. A hood 39 covers the outlets and also holes 40 for admitting air to the globe. The economizer may be of porcelain, fireclay, or carborundum. In one arrangement, the feed-tubes are connected by toggle-links to an insulating-block 27 which is carried by a rod depending from the common core 13A of two series solenoids. The solenoids are held between the base-plate and a second plate connected to it by rods 5, which extend above the base-plate and carry brackets and springs for supporting the core. In a modification, the stops 49 are carried by levers pivoted to the feed-tubes, the toggle-links being attached to the levers so that, in striking the arc, the links first move the stops against the electrodes, and then separate the latter. Falling electrode stumps are caught by a screen 62. An arc-deflecting maguet comprises vertical rods projecting into the solenoids and bent so that their lower ends face the arc.
