Process of Making Casein and like Compounds

Plastic compositions containing casein &c.- The composition described in Specification 14,098/07, is treated with an indurating-agent, such as formaldehyde, to produce a compound which will not stick to the mould, nor become spotted by separation of the ingredients. The composition, which becomes plastic when heated, is made by acting on casein or its derivatives with a converting-agent, such as a or #- naphthol, benzoic acid, hydroquinone, pyrocatechin, resorcin, salicylic acid, urea, phthalic acid, phloroglucin, and pyrogallol, either in their natural state, or in solution. The indurating-agent may be added before, after, or at the same time as the converting-agent. In an example, 4 lb. of casein or a derivative are sprinkled with 1¢ lb. of #-naphthol dissolved in alcohol, and mixed by heated rolls. This is indurated by adding 4 c.c. of a 40 per cent. solution of formaldehyde. The degree of induration however, may be varied. Scraps of celluloid, horn, rubber, resin, gums, finelydivided albuminoids, and colouring-matter may also be added.
