Zusammenfassung:2. Elias, A. A. Jan. 1. Footboards.-The footboards of railway carriages can be turned up, to prevent the doors from being opened when the train is in motion, and can be adjusted in height relatively to the station platform to prevent persons from falling between the train and the platform. The footboard f is pivoted to supports d, which are adapted to slide on brackets b secured to the underframe a. The footboard can be raised and lowered by chains j passing between guide-pulleys m and secured to the chain j which is connected to a wheel in the guard's van. The raising of the footboard causes brackets q thereon to engage bowls t, and effects the turning up of the footboard against the carriage doors. In a modification, Fig. 5, the supports are provided with a rack engaged by a quadrantp on a rod k running the length of the train, and this rod is rotated to operate the footboards by a worm gearing p , p . A flexible coupling for connecting the chain or rod between the carriages is described.
