Fire - escapes.- Rapid exit is effected from theatres, factories, hotels, &c. by means of inclined tubes or tunnels which extend from the upper floors to the street level, and the floors of which form slides. The tubes &c. consist of steel sections supported on brick walls or iron columns lined throughout with glazed tiles or other slippery material, and covered externally with asbestos and an outer casing of firebricks or the like. Electric lights are provided in glazed recesses in the roof. The tubes may be straight or of spiral form, and may be built into existing stairways.
