Drying sugar &c.-Moist sugar or other granular material is allowed to fall down vertical towers provided with adjustable baffles, while air is aspirated through the towers for cooling and drying purposes. For drying very moist material, steam pipes may be placed in parts of the apparatus which are then made of metal or other fireproof material. In an outer casing made of ill-conducting material, such as wood, and having air inlets b, is an inner casing having solid end-walls and sidewalls composed of horizontal laths in the plane of the wall with intervening spaces. Parallel to the side-walls are similar inner walls, forming with them the towers down which the material falls, the laths of the outer being opposite to the spaces of the inner walls. In these towers, baffle-plates e are arranged in vertical series connected and adjustable by single rods and linked to the lath walls. The material passes from a funnel g to a perforated drum in a channel f, and down between a cover connecting the tops of the inner lath walls and adjustable plates i, i , at the bottom of the channel f, over distributing-rollers k, into the towers.
