Zusammenfassung:16,605. Stearn, C. H., and Topham, C. F. July 28. Piston pumps.-Relates to a pump which is specially applicable for pumping and controlling the flow of solutions of cellulose &c. in the manufacture of filaments, in which the solution is maintained at a pressure sufficiently great to prevent the admission of air to the pump. The plunger 2 works tightly in the cylinder bored in the body 1 of the pump, and is actuated through a connecting-rod 4 by a crank-pin on a shaft 5 carrying a spur driving-wheel 6. The conical inlet and outlet openings 7 are arranged on opposite sides of the casing 1, so that the latter can be swung about the openings 7 as on pivots for the purpose of moving the wheel 6 into or out of gear with its driving-wheel. The solution of cellulose is admitted to the inlet valve 8 under pressure, which, however, is less than the pressure with which the delivery valve 9 is forced upon its seat. Both valves consist of steel balls which are pressed by springs &c. against ground seats. In order that the delivery of the solution shall be uniform, an air vessel 20 is attached to one side of the passage from the delivery valve. Screwed plugs 12, 13, 16, 17 are provided, as shown, for holding the valves to their seats and closing the pump chamber, and another opening to facilitate cleaning &c. The point of another screwed plug 18 engages with a groove 19 in the shaft 5 and holds it in place. The construction is such that the whole may be readily taken to pieces and cleaned &e.
