Phosphorus.-Red or amorphous phosphorus, for use in non-poisonous mixtures for matches ignitable on any surface, is rendered more resistant to the action of moisture by boiling in an aqueous solution of a metallic salt, such as nickel or cobalt sulphate, gold or platinum chloride, silver nitrate, or, preferably, copper sulphate. The phosphorus particles acquire a protective coating of phosphide. The phosphorus thus treated is washed well in water, and used either wet or dry.
