Compressing. - A double-acting pump 1 forces air beneath one of the pistons 19, 19 of the compressors 7, 7 , and draws it from beneath the other, any additional air that is required being drawn from the atmosphere through the valve 3. Air is drawn into the compressors through valves 14, and delivered through valves 15 to the reservoir 17, the pressure in which controls the speed of the steam or other motor that drives the pump 1. Valves 29, 29 , 31, 31 , for controlling the flow of air between the cylinders 7, 7 , and 1, are actuated by tappets 20, 20 in the cylinders 7, 7 , through slotted links 50, 50 and discs 27, 27 . The valve strokes are completed by a dash-pot 51 acting through a disc 24.
