Zusammenfassung:1850. Searle, M. A. Jan. 26. Brakes.-Relates to brake mechanism readily attachable to bicycles, the brakes acting on the tyre or rim and being actuated through cords &c. in tension. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a lever 9, pivoted on a clip 10 on the head, is connected by loops 15, 16 and a cord 14 to a lever 1 mounted on a clip 3 on the saddle pillar and carrying a brake block 7. The brake may be operated by a bell-crank lever pivoted on a clip on the upper frame tube, or by a lever on the handlebar connected by an adjustable ball-jointed rod with a bent lever on a clip 10 on the head. Similar means may be used for actuating rearwheel rim brakes. In one construction, the lever 1 is connected to a frame carrying the brake blocks, the frame being also connected by links to the bottom stays. Fig. 6 shows two other arrangements of rim brakes. In the form shown in full lines, the blocks 7 are carried by a fra.me 7 connected to a bell-crank lever 24 which is actuated through the flexible connection 14. In the arrangement shown in broken lines, the blocks 7 are carried on arms 29, pivoted on the stays and actuated by connection with the turned-back end of the lever 1. Springs 6, serves to keep the brakes normally inoperative.
