Charcoal.-Wood, peat, or other suitable material is forced by any suitable device, such as the forcing-device used in brick-making machines, through horizontal retorts, which may become gradually smaller in diameter, and which are arranged above the flues of a furnace in such a manner that the wood &c. passes in the opposite direction to the furnace gases. The gaseous products driven off, tar, acetic acid, &c. are led off by separate branch pipes fixed at the places where each product exists in its purest form. The hard charcoal formed is cooled in any suitable way, such as by lengthening the tubes and cooling the extended ends.
