1301103 Fluidized bed heat exchanger ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd 17 July 1970 [17 July 1969] 35979/69 Heading F4S In a heat exchanger wherein each of a plurality of adjacent chambers 14 contains a body 16 of material fluidized by a gas stream passing through the chamber, thermal insulation is provided between adjacent chambers, and heat exchange tubing 24 carrying a fluid to be heated or cooled, extends through the fluidized material. The fluidized material may be at a different temperature in adjacent chambers. The insulation shown comprises portions 12 which may be of refractory brick, or may be hollow and evacuated or filled with air, magnesium oxide or silicon oxide. In other forms, Figs. 3, 4, where the adjacent chambers are arranged one above the other, the insulation comprises the air space usually provided above the fluidized material. The fluidizing gas from a source 30 is shown as a number of parallelconnected streams flowing to the sequence of chambers 14 but any desired combination of series and parallel flow paths may be utilized.
