1299357 Copying by scanning K S PAUL & ASSOCIATES Ltd 3 March 1970 [17 March 1969] 13979/69 Heading H4F [Also in Division B6] In a photographic type-composing system wherein a modulated linear trace on a cathoderay tube T is projected on to successive parallel locations on a film F by a moving mirror carriage C in order to assemble characters, additional lateral movement of the linear trace on the tube T is provided with fly-back at the end of a character-producing sequence so that characters (e.g. horizontal rule) can be overlapped for forming a continuous print-out, or so that kerning such as overlap of f and i as shown in Fig. 6 can be acheived. The trace on the tube T is modulated by signals from a photomultiplier (PM, Fig. 4) receiving light from a scanning cathode-ray tube (IT) modulated by a transparent character matrix (M). A circuit for the system includes amplifiers (VDA3-VDA5, Fig. 11) controlling the point size of the character to be formed.
