Closed solid-fuel stoves; refuse-destroying stoves; stoves convertible into gas-producers, - A furnace or fire-box, adapted also for generating gas for power, lighting, or heating, consists of a plain self-contained fuel-container 1 into which fuel 2, such as sawdust, coal-dust, or household offal, is packed round a central perforated tube 4, or round a removable rod or bar. The fuel in the central passage 4 is lighted by means of alcohol or the like; a removable cover 5 is then applied, and the air-inlet regulator 7 and the outlet regulator 6 are adjusted until a smokeless flame is produced. When the regulator 6 is closed, gas is generated which may be conducted by pipes 14 to a lamp 15 or to a motor 16. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus as used for heating a kitchen range with a water-heating coil 13.
