1278169 Casting processes INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENI E O PATONA AKADEMII NAUK UKR SSR 20 April 1970 [16 June 1969] 18819/70 Heading B3F [Also in Divisions H2 and H5] In electroslag remelting apparatus comprising an electrode holder for an even number of groups of consumable electrodes I, II, III, &c., there being at least four groups of one or more electrodes and the groups being insulated from each other, and a plurality of transformer secondary windings, corresponding to half the number of groups, provided by a plurality of single-phase transformers 14, 15, 16, or at least one three-phase transformer, each secondary winding has its two terminals, e.g. 11, 21, connected to two different groups of electrodes, e.g. I, II, and the centre tappings 01, 02, 03, of all the secondaries are inter-connected through insulated bus-bar conductors 7, e.g. at a junction point 11, to provide for equal linear melting speeds of the electrodes and a uniform temperature distribution in the slag bath. The electrode holder may additionally support, in insulated manner, a blank 17 composed of a metal which differs from that of the electrodes, to which the centre tappings may be connected, one end of the blank dipping in the slag bath and providing for additional alloying of the ingot. Casting of cylindrical, rectangular or hollow (Fig. 3) ingots is mentioned, the ingots weighing 100 tons or more.
