Zusammenfassung: | 1,274,847. Carbon filaments. MORGANITE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 25 Aug., 1969 [24 May, 1968], No. 24883/68. Heading C1A. Carbon filaments are produced by a process comprising heating the filamentary material to. a temperature in excess of 900‹ C. in a non- oxidizing atmosphere and then cooling the filaments in a non-oxidizing atmosphere more rapidly than they would be if they were allowed to cool naturally in the furnace and at a rate of cooling of at least 1000‹ C. per hour. In the. example, filaments produced from acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate and itaconic acid were pyrolysed at 220‹ C. under tension in the presence of oxygen, placed in a graphite boat and heatedto 1300‹ C. at 125‹ C./hr. and then to 2000‹ C. at 500‹ C./hr. in an argon atmosphere. The filaments were then cooled at a rate of 3000‹ C. per hour to produce material having a modulus of elasticity of 61 x 106 p.s.i. andan ultimate tensile strength of 384,000 p.s.i. |
