Benzene and/or toluene are separated from mixtures with non-aromatics by extractive distillation using as sole selective solvent a substituted amide of formula in which R 1 is hydrogen or methyl, and R 2 and R 3 are each methyl or ethyl, and which contains a total of 3-5 carbon atoms. Suitable amides are dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide and diethyl formamide.
