Zusammenfassung:1,270,624. Intumescent coatings. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 18 Feb., 1970 [17 April, 1969], No. 7875/70. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Intumescent fire retardant coatings are applied to substrates, e.g. wood, glass, plastics, fabrics or metal, by spraying, painting or dipping with a composition containing a synthetic resin film former or binder and, as the intumescent agent, a novel crystalline form of melamine pyrophosphate characterised by (i) an X-ray diffraction pattern having a maximum intensity peak at 3.25Š and a peak at 10.64Š, (ii) an IR pattern having a broad absorption band at 710-740cm-1 and (iii) on being heating, losing weight substantially continuously with rising temperature between 300-350‹C. In Example VIII Douglas fir is coated with an aqueous latex paint based on vinyl acetate copolymer.
